CONGOMA Under Fire on New NGO Bill

The Council for Non-governmental organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA) has come under fire from Balaka Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) over its archaic use of communication channels following a meeting on NGO Act Amendment Bill.10 of 2022 of the New NGO Regulatory Authority (NGORA).

Balaka CSO Chairperson, John Bamusi, said that there were no wider consultations with local organizations rendering the bill untrustworthy with only penalties devoid of opportunities.

"We raised concerns because we were not consulted before the bill was passed in parliament and we just want them to consult us next time something crucial of this nature comes up," said Bamusi.

While conceding the shortfalls, CONGOMA Executive Director, Ronald Mtonga, said the mother body will do better next time to make sure that NGOs are on the same page with both the coordinator and regulator.

"Our overachieving goal is to have a centralized general assembly of CONGOMA," said Mtonga.

Secretary for the mother body Simekinala Kaluzi said the organizations were consulted but that not everyone would have been involved.
