Citizens Call for Enforcement of Constructing MPs Houses.

Some Malawians have asked government to enforce its proposal to construct houses for members of parliament, saying it can aid development in different constituencies.

This was said at a meeting with community members in Mangochi organised by the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT) through its Parliamentary Support Programme.

Speaking on behalf of the group,Mufti Shad Yusufu said most MPs live in cities and neglect their people, adding the concept can help lawmakers concentrate on how to enhance their constituencies.

Yusufu also expressed concerns on use of English language in parliamentary deliberations, saying it is denying them access to information as they can not understand the language.

CSAT Citizen Engagement manager Moffat Mpweya Phiri told us the concerns are genuine and they will engage parliament to consider the concerns being raised by the constituents.

"We believe the two year program with funding from USAID and Democracy International is key in bringing Parliament to the community members to fully understand parliamentary issues," Phiri added.

Mangochi South parliamentarian Lilian Patel commended CSAT for the initiative describing it as a tool in ensuring transparency and accountability.

The Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (CSAT) through its Parliamentary Support Programme with funding from USAID and Democracy International is conducting the project in nine districts of the country.

The organisation is also carrying out some national level activities such as media trainings on Acess To Information Act,National Debates and Civil Society Organizations capacity building trainings.
