Irrigation farmers in the area of group village headmen Mangamba and Ngongonda in Machinga say they expect improved crop yields from their winter cropping this year.

The farmers who recently received water pumps and other agriculture equipment from founder and leader of Living Word Evangelical Church, Prophet Dr. David F. Mbewe say hunger challenges will now be history as they will be able to harvest about three to four times a year.

Basikolo Phiri says he expects to send his children to school using profits he will attain from the agribusiness which he is doing with fellow farmers at Mangamba Irrigation Farmers, adding he is guaranteed food security.

Group village headman Mangamba who echoed Phiri’s sentiments, decried that lack of equipment is what is affecting most farmers from practicing winter cropping to recover what they lost during the recent cyclone Freddy, hence asking the government to intervene.

He adds irrigation farming would serve as a solution to exorbitant maize prices as supply would increase.

“Most people in my area are battling hunger as we are buying a bag of maize at K45000, which if this farming is promoted to many through provision of equipment to people who survived Cyclone Freddy here would be food secure.

Prophet David F. Mbewe who inspected progress being made at the irrigation scheme says Malawi is not utilizing its water and land resources, hence asking the government and faith leaders to pump in more resources towards irrigation farming.

“I think farmers deserve to be supported. It is a must do thing for the government as you know the resources it will be spending is already taxpayer’s money,’ Mbewe noted.

Meanwhile, prophet Mbewe says he aims to reach out to farmers across the country.
