Musician Lawi whose real name is Francis Phiri has partnered with Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust (MMCT) to voice concerns over the depletion of the environment in Mulanje Mountain.

This was disclosed in Mulanje on Friday during a joint presser by MMCT and Lawi brand team.

Information, Education and Communications Officer for Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust (MMCT) Kondwani Chamwala said there has been mass destruction of Mulanje Mountain since the 1990s.

“Several strides have been taken by Government and NGOs to control deforestation and restore trees in the Mountain especially cedar trees but little has been achieved and we believe the Lawi-MMCT project will raise more awareness on conservation of the Mountain,” said Chamwala.

A representative of the Lawi brand team Emmanuel Maliro said timber businesses especially cider timbers involve renowned and connected people.

“It is against this background that we also want to take on board chief executives and celebrities in this initiative, to raise awareness together on protecting Mulanje Mountain.

The climax of it all will be hiking Mulanje Mountain up to Sapitwa peak between 27 and 29th August 2021.

According to the hiking team leader Mwai Maigwa of travel with Mervis team, at least K4 million will be required for the hiking program.

Hikers Alliance, Adventures with Colby, Team Adventure, Makawa Fitness, Travel with Mervis, Paulendo Adventures, Eagles Eye Malawi, and Banja Care Malawi have shown interest to partner with the hiking event.
