ACF Technical Advisor, Dr. Amos Msekandiana says that most learners face difficulties in schools because teachers, caregivers, counselors and others are not aware of the condition of a child and how to help them.

" We have noted that many caregivers, teachers and others who are involved in schools’ management do not know how to handle learners with chronic conditions, so we would want to bridge that gap by creating an advocacy platform," said Msekandiana.

He said that for example, learners with diabetes, like Type-One, may want to be visiting restrooms frequently but if the teacher is not aware of that, they end up shouting at the learner and this disturbs the healthy and education of the student.

Msekandiana mentioned other medical conditions such as asthma and mental conditions as conditions that need collaboration between parents and teachers to work closely in managing them.

Neno District Council Director of Planning and Development Charles Lomoni has hailed the project, which will have a K10 million sports package and another K40 million for implementation, in pilot phase, as a welcome development in promoting access to equitable education.

Lomoni said that other stakeholders should also work in bridging gaps and work with due diligence in their projects in a bid to create healthy results.

Neno District Education Network chairperson Russell Msiska said the project which is in pilot phase, will help teachers and students to have a mutual understanding of each other’s condition.

He has however appealed for privacy over such matters.
