UDF, PP, UTM, AFFORD Formulating Strategic Plans

Four political parties namely, Alliance for Democracy AFFORD, United Democratic Front UDF, Peoples’ Party, and UTM are in the process of formulating strategic plans in an initiative being championed by Democracy Works Foundation.

Southern Africa Regional Director for the organization, Dr. Augustine Magolowondo, says the initiative was introduced after observing that most political parties have no road maps leading to challenges such as a limited revenue base.

He says it is crucial in democracy for members of a political party to have a shared vision to ably conduct performance assessments.

“Like any organization, political parties need to have a shared vision of where they want to be in a couple of years from now, beyond just thinking about the elections. Like any organization they have to think about how they want to grow, how to address their weaknesses,” he said.

Dr. Magolowondo further says failure by most political parties to have permanent district offices is an indication that interventions of this nature are needed.

UDF Secretary General Kandi Padambo, says the formulation of the party's strategic plan, is going on well.

“The strategic plan itself is going to be done by the party, so there are people that were assigned in the process of compiling that strategic plan, on the basis of information that was collected with assistance from Democracy Works Foundation,” said Padambo.

The initiative is also being championed by the foundation in countries such as Botswana and Lesotho.
