Flames Leaves for Chad Sunday

The Malawi government has finally released funds to enable the Flames leave for Chad on Sunday for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Ndjamena.

The development has brought relief for the team whose ticket booking with Ethiopian Airways was cancelled due to late payment.

“I can confirm that treasury has released funding for the team to travel to Chad,” said Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Sports Alex Mseka but did not disclose how much.

However, the Football Association of Malawi FAM had asked for 21 million kwacha for the trip.

Despite that the finding has brought good news, the bad news is that squad has been hit by injuries as three key players including skipper Peter Mponda have been ruled out.

The two others are defender Harry Nyirenda and midfield maestro Robert Ng'ambi.

However, Kinnah Phiri has called ten professionals to join the squad which will also have ten local players.

"I look at this as an opportunity for the local players and as a challenge for me," said Phiri.

Chad is a sad reminder to Malawi because it is where Flames’ hopes of qualifying for the 2012 Nations Cup faded as they conceded a last-minute equalizer which allowed Tunisia to sail through.

"We are not going there as angry people, we are going there to participate properly and put our heads up," the coach said.

Malawi is in qualifying Group F of the Africa Cup of Nations together with Nigeria, Kenya and Namibia.

Meanwhile, Coach Kinna Phiri was named his final squad Friday to travel to Chad.
