The Judicial Service Commission has sent to President Peter Mutharika four names of High Court judges from which a name of the new chairperson for the Malawi Electoral Commission shall be appointed as required by the laws of Malawi.

The submission of the judges’ names follows an official request by Mutharika for the same in a letter dated May 26th.

The president shall also be receiving, from political parties entitled to contribute, names of nominated members of the Commission for consideration on appointment.

Earlier, Presidential press secretary, Mgeme Kalila, confirmed to Zodiak Online:

“The President has informed the political parties that the names of the nominees should reach his office at least before the end of this month of May, 2020”.

The developments are taking place at a time the country is grappling with adherence to a court order to hold a presidential re run within 150 days from February 3, 2020.

Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gottani Harra, has in consultation with Mutharika, summoned Parliament for a budget meeting for seven weeks from June 5.

It is highly likely that business related to the fresh presidential election will dominate discussion of the meeting of parliament after the Supreme Court also found that the May 2019 election was mismanaged by the incompetent Jane Ansah Commission.
