Police in Mulanje are keeping in custody a 30-year-old man for allegedly killing his friend over K100.

The district police spokesperson Sub-Inspector Gresham Ngwira has identified the suspect as Enock Namanja and the deceased as Mayeso Maxwell.

“On Monday morning Maxwell and his friend Namanja earned K1, 000 for a piece work they did somewhere. And later, the two went for a drinking spree where they spent K900 and remained with K100 which Maxwell kept,” Ngwira said.

Later in the evening, Namanja met Maxwell and demanded the K100 so that he buys cannabis.

“Maxwell refused to give him the money, something that angered the suspect who took a knife and stabbed his friend on the chest and he died on the spot,” the police PRO said.

An angry mob caught and severely assaulted Namanja and was taken to Mulanje district hospital where he has been admitted.

Postmortem conducted at the district hospital has revealed that Maxwell died of severe loss of blood.

According to Ngwira, Namanja will answer an offence of murder contrary to section 209 of the Penal Code.
