The Ministry of Local and Rural Development has assured communities living around some of the stalled Rural Growth Centre (RGC) projects in the country that completion works will resume soon.

The assurance comes after communities around Chitekesa RGC in Phalombe suspected political interference and corruption over the delay by the authorities to resume construction which stalled years ago.

Government, with funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB) through the Local Development Fund (LDF) has been developing the four RGCs of Malomo in Ntchisi, Monkey Bay in Mangochi, Jenda in Mzimba and Chitekesa in Phalombe to empower rural masses  economically by providing them with jobs and reduce urbanisation.

Among other things, it involves construction of school blocks, tele-centres, modern markets, bus depots and processing factories for value addition of various products.

At the Chitekesa Rural Growth centre, construction of a market, bus depot and community stadium stopped some two years ago, raising suspicion of corruption among government authorities involved.

Councillor Francis Nunkhazingwe has Zodiak Monday that communities suspect the funds for the remaining structures and compensations were misused by some government individuals.

Nunkhazingwe asked authorities to seriously consider completing the Chitekesa Rural Growth Centre as it would uplift the socio economic wellbeing of the people in the area.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development Mulhabase Mughogho says the projects stalled due to lack of funding, but currently plans to finalize them are underway.

Mughogho said construction of a community stadium in Phalombe will take a bit longer because it falls under different phase.
