Man Arrested for Offering Nephew for Sell

A 67-year-old man has been arrested in Mulanje for allegedly offering his 13-year-old nephew for sale.

Mulanje Police Spokesperson Sergeant Gresham Ngwira identified the man as Biton Phambala who first pegged the boy at K2 million before slashing the price down to K1.2 million.

“We have indeed arrested Mr. Phambala on allegation that he was offering his nephew for sale at a price of K1 .2 million,” said Sergeant Ngwira.

Sergeant Ngwira told Zodiak Mr. Phambala on Saturday visited Mr. Ibrahim Bakuwa, a businessperson who sells dried fish, at his house at Mwanakhu village where he told him that he had a hot business.

He said when he asked him what sort of hot business he was talking about, Mr. Phambala said he was selling his nephew.

Sergeant Ngwira said Mr. Bakuwa then tipped village head Mwanakhu who told him to allow him come with the boy while planning to apprehend him.

Mr. Bakuwa then told the suspect to bring the boy the following day, which was Sunday.

The suspect then brought the unsuspecting boy on Sunday at around 11 O’clock in the morning and Mr. Bakuwa called the village head who mobilize his subjects who rushed to the house and apprehended him.

They took him to Chambe Police Unit and was referred to Mulanje

Police Station where he was charged with child trafficking under Section 79 of the Child Care, Justice and Protection Act, said Sergeant Ngwira.

Mr. Phambala hails from Harineki village in the area of Traditional Authority Nkanda in Mulanje district.

Meanwhile, Project Officer for Network for Youth and Development

(NFYD) Chancy Mkandawire has described Mr. Phambala’s action as one of worst he as ever seen.

He said it was his hope that justice will prevail in this case.

“We anticipate justice and nothing else in this case. This is gross abuse of the rights of the boy,” said Mr. Mkandawire.
