Amid escalating incidents of violence in the country, the Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has started implementing a national peace advocacy project.

EAM Head of programs Bryer Mlowoka told Zodiak Online on Thursday that the project dubbed “Enhancing Church Engagement in Peace Building, Electoral Governance and Decentralization has been rolled out to the three volatile districts of Lilongwe, Mulanje and Karonga.

“We at EAM believe that through engagements, misunderstandings that are inevitable can be prevented from generating into violence,” said Mlowoka.

He said in districts like Mulanje, they will use existing district peace committees when implementing the project.

EAM presented the project to District Executive Committee in Mulanje on Thursday.

Speaking on behalf of the District Commissioner, Director of Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Yaz Nyirenda said Mulanje has been registering unprecedented cases of violence.

“As a district we have been registering political, ethnic, chieftaincy and land related violence and this project we trust will help in reducing these cases,” said Nyirenda.

According to Mlowoka, the project will run for three years and is funded by a German based Christian organization called Bread for the World (BftW) to the tune of 400, 000 euros.
