Boy, 2, Dies after Drowning in a Well

A 2-year-old boy has died in Mangochi after drowning in a well within his parent’s compound.

Mangochi police deputy spokesperson, Sub Inspector Amina Tepani Daudi, told Zodiak Online Monday that the incident occurred on Sunday, 6th September, 2020, at Mtalimanja village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.

“On the evening of September 5, 2020 the family discovered that their son who was playing outside was missing and search was conducted along with well-wishers but to no avail,” explained Tepani Daudi.

According to Tepani Daudi, the child's dead body was discovered floating in the well within the compound which according to the parents they use for irrigation purposes.

“Police rushed to the scene and took the dead body to Mangochi District Hospital where postmortem revealed suffocation as the cause of death,” said Tepani Daudi.

Currently police in the district have made an appeal to all parents and guardians to cover their wells with strong lids and not to leave their children unattended to since they need parental care, guidance and close supervision.

The case comes barely two days after a 7-year-old boy also died in the district following fire that gutted down his parents’ house on Friday.
