Assistant National Coordinator for Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council Asayire Kapira told Zodiak on Monday that such malpractices are affecting the environment.

Kapira thinks that there is need for government and development partners to establish designated places for disposal.

Kapira is of the view that such interventions will help citizens to be responsible in promoting hygiene and protecting the environment.

"It is a responsibility of every person be it parents, hospitals to have special places to dispose used sanitary pads.

“Even as a country we need to have central areas to burn such pads," said Kapira.

CAHESH Executive Director MacDonald Kaluwa and Chikwawa Director of Education Chrissy Chim'sale advised parents to be open in discussing menstrual issues with girls.

"We think mother groups are key in providing necessary support to girls especially those with disabilities on menstrual hygiene management," said Kaluwa.

On her part, Chimsale asked non state actors to construct modern wash rooms to support the girls during menstruation.

While calling for this support, we urge parents to break the silence on menstruation issues," explained Chimsale.

This is in the background of a five-day training that Campaign for Health Education and Sanitation and Hygiene, CAHESH is conducting for mother groups on menstrual hygiene management, largely to benefit girls with disabilities.
