Authorities in Chikwawa have indicated that the warning from the Department of Climate Change and meteorological services of possible flooding in lower areas in 2020/2021 rainy season should push stakeholders to plan well to save people's lives and property.

Director of Planning and Development Thokozilie Ngwira told stakeholders on Monday afternoon that both duty bearers and villagers need to have thorough preparations to avoid damages.

Ngwira said all government departments and stakeholders are supposed to have workable plans to strive in protecting people from heavily being affected by the floods.

The planning and development director then warned communities to stay in safer places.

"I hope every sector has heard of the forecast. Let us be prepared. Let us sensitize people to move to upland.

"Hope the agriculture sector will also advise people on best crop varieties to plant for them to realize bumper yields," said the DPD.

Chief Meteorologist responsible for forecasting and weather observation in the Department of climate change and meteorological services Charles Vanya said Chikwawa and Nsanje districts are likely going to face floods from October 2020 to April 2021 rainy season because of Lanina.

Vanya then called on authorities to encourage people to relocate to upper areas other than waiting for floods to hit.

"We really hope to have floods in 2020/2021 rainy season and that this will greatly affect the Lower shire," explained Vanya.

Lower shire is always exposed to natural disasters especially floods and dry spells which make villagers to be food insecure.
