Director of Education, Youth and Sports at Mulanje district council Enock Chumachawo has told us that there are 2,101 toilets in all primary schools in the district against an enrollment of 220, 741 learners.

“There is little progress made to address the challenge due to inadequate resources and we are banking on water and sanitation partners to help us in construction toilets in our schools,” said Chumachawo.

Meanwhile, Centre for Community Organization and Development (CCOD) has constructed 54 VVIP toilets, 27 each at Chimwaza and Khaya primary schools in Mulanje district.

CCODE Executive Director Zilire Luka said the organization noted acute shortage of toilets in most primary schools in Mulanje hence intervening to reduce the gap.

“The toilets have water facilities and as for ladies’ toilets, they have change rooms to help them during menstruation period and all are disability friendly,” said Luka. 

Authorities at both schools have promised to take care of the facilities saying that is the only way to demonstrate their appreciation to the donors.
