The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) - Blantyre Arch Diocese has expressed hope that the introduction of the Voices and Actions Accountability in Malawi will help to strengthen transparency and citizen engagement.

CCJP Project Officer, Louisa Kwapata, told stakeholders during a project briefing at Blantyre City Council on Tuesday that this will create a platform for duty bearers to explain to citizens on the utilization of funding from national budget and public revenue collection streams.

“We are conducting this project together with HIVOS. We believe communities in the city will have chance to interrogate issues of transparency, accountability and citizen engagement,” said Kwapata.

She added that some of the outlined activities include training media organizations, journalists, civil society organizations, local government officials in high spending ministries, departments and agencies on strategic use of ICT in public procurement, information dissemination and publishing of contracts,” she added

Blantyre City Council Acting Chief Executive Officer, Costly Chanza, is optimistic that CCJP’s intervention will make the city governance structures to be vibrant and work in the best interest of the residents.

“In Blantyre, we have committees at grassroot level which are called community development committees which anchor projects at the lowest level.

“We are in the process of coming up with new development committees. So, we hope CCJP will help to train them to fully know their roles,” said Chanza.

Apart from Blantyre, the project is also being implemented in Mangochi, Ntcheu, Mzimba, Mzuzu, Zomba and Dowa.
