The intervention will see Water for People engaging and building capacity of the private sector in pit latrine construction and waste emptying.

Mayor for Luchenza Municipality Councilor Henderson Supuni has welcomed the intervention saying toilet hygiene has been a challenge in the municipality as the council has no any waste bowser.

He said with limited space in the municipality, some residents use pit latrines to their fullest as they have no space to keep on constructing other pit latrines.

“In this case, the best solution is emptying the human wastes and dump them at the dumping site but unfortunately, we do not have the waste bowser,” said Councilor Supuni.

Sanitation Programs Officer for Water for People Brian Mlenga said they will be supporting individuals and companies that are in sanitation trade to take their businesses to residents in the municipality.

“Our focus will be building capacity of companies that are in pit latrine construction and emptying businesses at the same time support the municipal council in developing its sanitation master plan,” said Mlenga.

Generally, sanitation has been poor in Luchenza municipality with residents singling out poor drainage system and poor rubbish pits among others.
