FRIM to Eradicate Invasive Alien Species on Mulanje Forest Reserve
The Forest Research Institute of Malawi (FRIM) says it has instituted trials to establish best technologies to remove invasive alien species on Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve.
FRIM Forest Research Officer Innocent Taulo who cites the invasive species as bracken fern, Himalayan Roseberry and black wattle says the studies have been set on Mulanje mountain and Nyika National Park.
“As you can see removal of pine, another invasive species in the forest reserve is underway but these other invasive species are intact in the mountain and they are spreading alarmingly; thereby, impacting negatively to the native plants in the forest reserve,” said Taulo.
He said this is the reason FRIM is conducting trials to establish best technologies to remove the invasive species.
Though invasive species are a threat to the country’s forest reserves, illegal harvesting of forest produce is also another threat to the forest reserves.
