Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA) says this year’s festive season has no hype compared to previous years because people do not have money for either luxury or basic commodities.

CAMA Executive Director, John Kapito, says people should expect such type of the season for the next two years with the increase in cost of living.

“Money that people were earning is the same but the market has considerably gone mad. Therefore, people do not have disposable income to go out in the market to buy even the basic commodities.

“This will be the trend to the next two years because things are not going to settle down as well,” he said.

Social commentator, Lucky Mfungwe, has called on the people to be careful and focus their spending on basic and important needs only.

“What we are seeing is a wise reaction from the people in the fact that we are focusing on production than consumption.

“Come January, we want to see children going to school and that is what we could learn from the people’s reaction,” said Mfungwe.

Some people have taken to social media to describe this year’s festive season as dull compared to previous Decembers.
