Government has sent a stern warning to chiefs who engage in corruption to desist the vice as it slows down development.

Deputy minister of local government, Halima Daudi, was speaking this on Saturday in Balaka during the elevation ceremony of STA Kachenga to T/A Kachenga and GVH Makwinja to STA Makwinja respectively.

Senior Chief Chowe speaking on behalf of Paramount Chief Kawinga said corruption and nepotism are dividing the people.

“Some Chiefs indeed receive bribes and twist justice thereby sowing divisions among the subjects," said Chowe.

Balaka district commissioner MacLoud Kadammanja and Balaka North member of parliament, Tony Ngalande, in their speeches said the elevation of the two chiefs signifies that they are hardworking and will accelerate development but were quick to advise the two not engage in partisan politics and corruption.

Government banned chiefs from elevating village and group village headmen/women recently and the ban still stands.
