Police in the country say they have deployed its uniformed and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers to areas and evacuation camps to enhance security against criminal activities.

National Police Assistant Spokesperson, Felix Misomali says they have a primary responsibility to ensure safety of survivors in camps hence making the move.

He says they are conducting sensitization meetings with women and girls whom are vulnerable to abuses.

Misomali says the police are conducting patrols together with community policing structures.

"With help from community policing structures, we are on the ground day and night.

"Our men and women are on alert to apprehend whoever is causing havoc in such places," noted Misomali.

While citing the fracas which happened at a camp in Nsanje, Executive Director of Social Accountability and Transparency, Willy Kambwandira has expressed worry on the matter saying his organization is overwhelmed with reports of loose security in camps.

"We are getting reports everyday through our toll-free number about criminal activities happening in evacuation camps in Nsanje, Thyolo and Chikwawa, it's not a good sign," said Kambwandira.
