Promotion of Hygiene In schools Vital- WVM

A child focused organization, World Vision Malawi (WVM) has underscored the need to promote hygiene in schools to spur provision of quality education in the country.

The organization’s Development Facilitator of Water Sanitation and Hygiene Integrated in Dindi and Thundu Area Programs in Phalombe, Ireen Chongwe Banda, told Zodiak Online Sunday that they want learners to learn how they can practice hygiene in schools and at home to avert prevalence of diarrhea. 

Banda said learners need to be trained and motivated to ensure that they are following five critical times when washing hands among others.

“We are promoting hygiene in schools and homes in areas where we are working to avert cases of diarrhea among learners”, said Banda.

She made the remarks when the organization awarded learners and schools that have performed extremely well in the promotion of schools in Swang’oma Zone under Dindi Area Program (AP)

One of awardees, a standard seven learner at Nambazo Primary School, Elizabeth Nthambula, said through Wash Up clubs initiated by the organization, her body hygiene has been improved.

She has vowed to continue practicing hygiene at home and school to help in the reduction of cases water borne diseases hence encouraging fellow learners to borrow a leaf from her.

“I have learnt a lot from the Wash up club and I want to encourage learners to join these clubs to enhance hygiene in their respective schools,” said Nthambula.

Chief education officer for Phalombe, Dr. Anne Chizengo, hailed the organization for introducing the initiative in schools, adding it will promote hygiene among learners in schools.

Among other prizes which best learners and schools received include soap, buckets, moppers and bins.
