Illovo Unveils Plans to Introduce Small Sugar Packets

Illovo Sugar Company has unveiled plans to start making small packets of sugar to make it affordable to many customers following its recent price hike.

The company's Managing Director, Lekani Katandula, says the move of raising the price was aimed at curbing the smuggling of sugar into neighboring countries of Mozambique, Tanzania, and Zambia.

“Firstly this price increase  was necessary to curb smuggling of sugar from Malawi to  Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania because our sugar prices were much lower than all these neighboring countries.

“But going forward in terms of continuing to make sugar affordable to those that may not afford 1 kilogram packets for instance, we are looking at introducing more  smaller packages soon,” Katandula said.

Katandula was speaking Wednesday  night at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre at the Finale of “the Everyday Chef Competition”.

Meanwhile an 18-year girl, Esther Maziya studying Culinary Arts at Mzuzu University, has won a grand prize of K5 million in the 2022 Illovo Sugar Everyday Chef competition. Maziya scored 104 points out of 150 points to beat seven other contestants.

Pacharo Tembo was the runner-up getting K2 million and Hope Mazuwa came third taking home K1 million in the competition.

However  Consumer Association of Malawi (CAMA) executive director John Kapito says Illovo's plans still  make it harder  for consumers to pay for the small package.

Kapito said; ”That does not make the price better. People will still find it hard to pay for the small package.”

“Even if they are small then people will be spending more money to buy the small packets,” Kapito added.
