Reacting to the calls on Sunday, the ministry's principal secretary Chikondano Mussa, says a critical look into the current curriculum, indicates that education experts included the lessons at various levels of education.

Mussa has given an example of home economics in secondary school and other subjects at the tertiary level.

"When we have done our general education, our students proceed to tertiary and higher education. And it is at places like Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences where now issues of manufacturing are learnt and practiced. If you follow us through from primary, secondary and tertiary, you will see that all that is embedded in our curriculum. For instance, in home economics, we teach them on jam making," Mussa explained.

Some stakeholders have been calling on the government to review the current curriculum used in schools to include manufacturing and entrepreneurial trades to deal with the current unemployment.

Meanwhile, Mzuzu University educationist Dr. Foster Lungu agrees that the country moved away from the hands-on trades in the curriculum and focused on knowledge.

Dr. Lungu says it’s high time the country found a way of including them now that the economy is not creating jobs for all school leavers to be independent.

"Issues of manufacturing are not new. In the past in secondary schools we used to have carpentry, woodwork and the like. But as a country, somehow, we move away from these hands-on issues and focused on knowledge," Dr Lungu said.

In 2007 the country reviewed the primary school curriculum and in 2015 secondary curriculum was also reviewed.

Review of the curriculum would take about three years, according to authorities.

The country’s development blueprint Malawi 2063, among others aims at enhancing industrialisation through agriculture which is the main-stay of the economy.

Currently, one of the industrial and entrepreneurial expert Kondwani Kachamba Ngwiri is on the manufacturing training tour across the country targeting 5, 000 manufacturers by the end of this year, a move some have lauded.
