Social Commentator Victor Chipofya who is also University of Malawi based lecturer has expressed doubts on the relevance of president Chakwera's public speaking award initiative to the country.

The award was introduced last year as part of the president's Intervention as SADC chair to persuade youths from the region to open up on their aspirations.

Speaking to Zodiak Online on Monday, Chipofya wondered why the initiative whose initial award has gone to a Mozambican national should be continued now when Malawi no longer chairs the Southern African Countries regional grouping.

Chipofya has also quashed authority's sentiments that the move  demonstrates the president's willingness to listen to people's aspirations being raised locally, saying the current prevailing social and economic challenges do not attest to that.

"Currently, the country is going through a number of social economic challenges. People have also gone into the streets to voice out the same. However one would argue that there has not been so much efforts to adress the concerns. It can therefore be disputed that the move demonstrates the president's willingness to heed the people's concerns", said Chipofya.

State House Press officer, Anthony Kasunda while stressing that the iniative will be continued, said it is part of the president's way of encouraging people in the country to voice out their concerns.

The inaugural award for the initiative has gone to Joao Ortega a Mozambican national who has been awarded 4, 000 thousand US dollars for his speech about the need for Africans to work and stand together on the world stage in  protecting its resources from exploitation.
