TRADE Advocates for Artificial Insemination

Transforming Agriculture through Diversification and Entrepreneurship (TRADE) says adoption of artificial insemination can assist the country to have improved dairy and beef livestock.

Speaking to Zodiak after training 20 public and private artificial Insemination technicians at Mikolongwe Training Centre on Thursday, TRADE Commodity specialist for livestock Emmanuel Mponya said his organisation is currently training the technicians in order to support dairy and beef value chains.

“We have started with the first cohort which comprises technicians from Karonga, Rumphi and Chitipa. Later, we will also engage others from Thyolo and Blantyre to assist dairy farmers,” said Mponya.

He added that time is now to deal with the prevalence rate of inbreeding thereby the need to scale up artificial insemination activities in the country.

“The arrangement is that after the training, the technicians will be provided with semen strolls to start the actual work,” he explained.

In her part, Assistant Veterinary officer for Muhuju EPA in Rumphi, Bernadetta Ndlovu commended TRADE for providing them with a training on artificial insemination so as to promote beef production in their district.

The goal of TRADE is to improve sustainable livelihoods of rural people in Malawi. With a development objective, “Increased value chain commercialization and resilience of rural poor and smallholder producers.”

Authorities say TRADE will also support rural entrepreneurs, focusing on youths and women to develop and sustain their agribusiness enterprise opportunities and ensuring that commodities are nutrition sensitive.
