Community, Malamulo Mission Tassle Over Land

Just a break from land wrangle between locals and tea estate companies in Thyolo, now the communities close to Malamulo Mission Hospital and the health facility are in a tussle over land.

The locals are accusing the hospital of using its financial might to grab their land.

Leader of the aggrieved community, Richard Chisuse, told Zodiak Online that the community has had farm access to the piece of land in contention since 1973 and was surprised when in 2016 the hospital begun claiming ownership of the land.

“We did not take heed to the claims and we continued cultivating on the land until we received an injunction last year stopping us from doing any activity on the land,” said Chisuse.

But the area’s chief, Traditional Authority Khwethemule, says it is the community that is encroaching upon land belonging to Malamulo mission land.

“Yes they are my subjects but I cannot back lawlessness,” said T/A Khwethemule.

The hospital Human Resources Manager who was representing the hospital on the land issue, Chitsanzo Chitalo, declined to comment on the matter saying the T/A had summed it all well.
