The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has removed a total of 13,244 names of multiple registrants on the voter’s register and admission that some people were registering more than once.

MEC Chairperson Justice Dr. Jane Ansah told journalists in Lilongwe on Tuesday that even with those multiple registrants, the overall numbers of people eligible to cast their votes on May 21 next year has increased by 3, 080.

She said following the cleaning and inspection of the voter list, the final figure of voters in 2019 is 6, 859, 375.

According to Dr. Ansah, it was discovered when the Commission was building the voter register that some figures were not captured correctly in districts of Salima, Mchinji, Dedza, Mangochi, Balaka and Mulanje; hence the rise.

“It was discovered that there were some few centres whose data was not completely uploaded and also in some centres where data was not uploaded at all that has brought the number up because we have new figures,” she said.

She added that majority of the variations were due to operators capturing registrants using the wrong centre which the Commission has corrected in their database.

Voters have since been encouraged to go and verify their details on the voter register in the centres where they registered.

The Commission is also planning a free SMS Voter Register Verification System using TNM and Airtel numbers by dialling *2019#.
