Government has finally agreed to compensate an HIV negative woman in Mulanje who was erroneously put on Ant-Retroviral Therapy for three years.

Lawyer for the woman Counsel William Chiwaya of Jivason and Company told Zodiak Online that government through lawyer from the office of the Attorney General, Aristotle Mahonga, admitted the liability.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice, Pilirani Masanjala, said what remains now is for both parties to agree on compensation terms.

The woman demanded compensation of K30 million from the Ministry of Health for what she said is the suffering she went through due to negligence of a health worker who wrongly tested and put her on ART.

Since May last year, government had been contesting the compensation arguing that the woman was correctly diagnosed with HIV but due to drug adherence, her viral load was suppressed; hence, her negative status.

The issue came to light when Zodiak reported the incident in 2017.
