At least 3, 461 children have been injected with a Typhoid Vaccine in the first month of a study being implemented by the Malawi Liverpool Trust and the government of Malawi in Ndirande and Zingwangwa Townships in Blantyre.

The study rolled out in February this year with the vaccination of 4 year-old Golden Kondowe at a launch held at Ndirande Health Centre.

MLWT anticipates to meet the target of vaccinating 24, 000 in the next six months.

“We hope by the end of August this year, we would have achieved our target. There are no major challenges we have faced this far apart from minor technical issues which we resolved instantly,” said Tyvac Programme Manager, Teresa Misili told Zodiak Online.

Adding: “Since the first child was vaccinated at Ndirande Health Centre, the trial has been rolled out to schools in Ndirande, Zingwangwa health centre and Zingwangwa catchment areas.

We are still going around vaccinating children in schools and the health centres. We will keep on inviting mothers to participate in this Typhoid vaccine trial.”

Misili stressed that all participants in the study are doing so voluntarily and after being briefed with all necessary information about the vaccine and its importance.

“Mothers and guardians have to go through all the required procedures in order for their children to be vaccinated; this process takes approximately one hour. Every mother has to give consent for the child to be vaccinated and if a child is 8 years and above they too have to give consent,” she said.

Researchers say the Typhoid vaccine is safe and effective in preventing typhoid fever. It has been tested in other countries such as India and the UK, and proved to be safe and effective.

The vaccine has also been prequalified by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
