NU Communities Speak Against MEC Proposed Maps

Members of the public continue to give mixed views on the recently released preliminary proposed constituency and ward boundary maps by Malawi Electoral Commission-MEC as some communities in Ntcheu Bwanje North says the map is there just to confuse electorates and a hindrance to development.

Speaking to Zodiak Online today, Village Headman Kaiya 1 under Inkosi Ganya feels betrayed by the electoral body hence advising legislators to vote against the maps when brought to Parliament for legislators' approval.

“The new map is a setback to development. We tend to wonder on what criteria did MEC use to demarcate the area,” said Kaiya 1.

Herbert Chidothi is another concerned citizen from the area and claims voter apathy is imminent in 2025 general elections if the electoral body does not treat the concerns with the utmost respect.

However, MEC Chairperson, Chifundo Kachale says the maps were produced based on suggestions and feedback the commission received from stakeholders concerning the review exercise.

“MEC produced the proposed maps based on feedback it received from people. However, all suggestions relating to the same will be incorporated if permitted by the law,” he said.

The exercise brings the number of constituencies to 229 up from 193 and wards to 500 from 462.
