Chairperson for Chitekesa Milk Bulking Group, Doreen Chaipa, says lack of markets is forcing dairy farmers to sell milk at a cheaper price of K200 per liter since they are failing to sell the product as a cooperative.

According to Chaipa, since registering the group as a cooperative in 2015, the group has been struggling to sell the produce.

“The cooperative has been approaching the council to facilitate market linkage so that they can sell milk at a better price but to no avail,” said chaipa.

She said one of the dairy companies in Blantyre failed to give them an opportunity to sell milk due to long distance and low volumes of milk which they were producing.

Chaipa said on average, the cooperative produces 220 liters of milk daily but they end up selling it locally at a cheaper price of K200

She has since appealed to dairy companies to come to their rescue,   saying they are failing to realize profits.
