Old Mutual is celebrating 175 years of existence with a K2 million donation to children in Neno district through Save the Children.

Group Chief Executive Officer, Edith Jiya, says the donation to Save the Children is part of a contribution towards the COVID-19 emergency response for Malawi initiative.

“We trust this amount will assist to meet the initiative which we are happy to be associated with as they directly impact children; our future customer.

“This donation comes as one of the many initiatives and engagements we are taking as we are celebrating this milestone and as a responsible business in Malawi.

“This donation follows The Old Mutual Blantyre Foundation Trust’s pledge worth MK29.1 Million as part of the private sector response and will benefit various hospitals nationwide and Free Life Cover to the Malawi’s Front liners n fighting the COVID-19 Pandemic worth MK305.0 Million of premium,” she said.

Old Mutual Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager, Patience Chatsika, said they value children as their future customers.

Save the Children Country Director, Kim Koch, said the support has arrived a time when it is needed the most; when Malawi’s children are out of school owing to COVID-19 pandemic.

She said the gesture will help children with disabilities among others and will save the children from sexual exploitation as they are in their homes.

Executive Director of Community Action for Sustainable Development Organization, David Chidakwa, said the money will not only help children in Neno but also those in areas surrounding the district.

"There is a community radio in Neno which we will use to disseminate messages about child protection. This message will reach to listeners outside the district; thereby, benefiting more children. Children here face a lot of challenges emanating from poor road network that makes it difficult for them to access schools, for example," he said.

On 17 May 1845, a Scotsman called John Fairbairn started the Mutual Insurance Company.

For 175 years, Old Mutual Limited has grown to become a leading financial institution in all its footprints, according to Jiya.
