There are higher prospects that internet users will get reduced data cost following the increased competition on the market.

On Wednesday, Bengolnet Limited connected international gateway with Mozambique at Zobue with a target of bringing down the costs.

Bengolnet Managing Director, Mohammad Zafar Abdullah, says the connectivity is in response to, among others, growing public outcry on high data charges.

“Actually, we launched this company in 2014 when we got license from the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA). We managed to connect the internet direct from Mozambique side in Zobue. That one we have done it today.

“We have done this because in Malawi, everyone is buying internet in Gb package. It is like water in the glass; once you drink it, it is finished. We want to introduce unlimited connection.

“We already have it in Mzuzu and Blantyre. We decided we can have internet of our own so that we can get it cheaper. Our internet is unlimited; not water in the glass,” he said.

Abdullah added that internet in the country is expensive because “there is no Malawian company offering internet connectivity.

“If some other operators are using the connectivity, they are using the fiber optic line through other operators renting it from somewhere. This is 100 percent Malawian company. We are doing bandwidth ourselves.”

Freroz Khan, Managing Director of SA Investments said that the coming in of Bengolnet Ltd has also brought in competition on the market, saying this is good for quality service provision.

“For the past one and half years, we tried to expand our business so we have started putting our system online.

“I was looking for a reliable internet operator and I sourced a few but finally I bowed down to Bengolnet,” he said.
