He assured the country’s Central Bank, Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) that they will operate within the stipulated regulations.

Chokani was reacting to a warning by RBM's director for capital markets and microfinance department Dr. Mark Lungu that failure to adhere to such regulations will see their license being revoked.

“They have the mandate to manage risks, they should protect the hardly earned public funds. They should follow the rules of the game.

“We have our own ways of investigating and if we will find that public funds have been lost, we will revoke the license, because it is given to them based on the same trust,” said Dr. Lungu.

Dr. Lungu  nevertheless commended the initiative.

“I expect a lot of investors now to come forward as they have been given another avenue on board. They were limited as there were only five but now 6.

“Most of the time we keep our money in the commercial banks where the savings are sometimes negative in real terms but when you invest in the capital market through institutions like BridgePath, you expect to get something positive.

“At the moment If u look savings rate in the commercial banks take out the inflation you will see that we are in negative but at least on the capital market u can get some positive return, surely should bring some disposable income to our economy especially to the lower end of our population,” explained Dr. Lungu.
