Illovo Sugar Company has injected K150 million towards an endowment fund to assist needy students especially females at the Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST).

The company’s human resource director, Khumbo Mtambo Banda believes that empowering female students has potential to see more female students take up roles predominantly held by men.

‘’The intention that Illovo has is to ensure that we facilitate and encourage women to take up science and technology roles. We believe that if we start from an education point of view then they will contribute to the economy and we will be able to employ them,’’ she said.

She made her remarks on Wednesday when the company injected K150 million towards an endowment fund to assist needy students especially females at the MUST.

MUST Vice Chancellor, Professor Address Malata told Zodiak Online that she is excited with the contribution as this will keep students in school.

‘’The endowment fund input from Illovo this morning is focusing on girls who are pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (stem) courses. We are very happy because we do not want any girl to drop out of school due to lack of school fees,’’ Professor Malata said.

Professor Malata has, however, asked other stakeholders to come in to support more needy students through similar contributions to their endowment fund.
