Oxfam Malawi says it remains committed to ensuring that students in the country are learning in a good and safe environment.

Speaking during the handover ceremony of 100 mattresses to Ntaja Community Day Secondary School in Machinga, Oxfam Country Director Lingalireni Mihowa said they believe that education is the key driver for the development of the nation.

“We want to make sure that all vulnerable children have access to secondary education and that the learning environment is safe,” said Mihowa.

The K875, 000 worth donation has come after Oxfam America and their donors visited Malawi in July to appreciate the work female parliamentarians are doing in their areas.

On their visit, they visited Ntaja CDSS where Member of Parliament for the area, Esther Jolobara has constructed a girls’ hostel using the Community Development Fund (CDF).

Jolobala said the donation will help girls stay in school as they will be accommodated in a safe environment.

Laurent Kamanga is the Deputy Head Teacher for Ntaja CDSS and he says the mattresses will help ease the situation at the school as some students were sleeping on mats and some on spring beds without mattresses.

At least 99 students will be housed in the new facility.
