M’mbelwa Council Moves to Evict Information Officers
Daggers have been drawn between the M’mbelwa District Council and Department of Information following plans by the Council to evict information officers from their office and relocate them to a tiny office that can hardly accommodate two tables.
The Council’s move to evict the information officers follows an alleged deal by the Director of Administration, Thomas Mwafongo, who wants the office to be occupied by an NGO which will implement a 'Spotlight Initiative' project on gender based violence in the district
Mzimba District Information Officer, Edgrant Ndoza, told Zodiak Online that the move will paralyze their operations as they are being moved to a tiny office he described as a 'kitchen'.
"What is surprising is that the Council has many offices which are vacant while some have been given to bogus civil society organizations. Why they are targeting the information office is a mystery to me," said Ndoza.
Mwafongo has already instructed the Director of Public Works, Allan Jere, who led people believed to be from a construction company to start making measurements of the said office to pave way for rehabilitation by the NGO
"They directors have been sending people to make measurements in my office actually to demolish it but I together with some of my co-workers have been chasing them," said Ndoza.
Meanwhile, the Regional Information Officer for the North, Henry Nkhata, has instructed the DOA to put it in writing as to why he is evicting the information officers opting to give the office to an NGO
The Council is yet to comment on the matter.
