Balaka to Institute By-laws to Protect Farmers From Exploitation

A two day Agriculture Fair in Balaka has ended with Balaka District Council expressing commitment to develop by-laws aimed at protecting smallholder farmers from exploitation in the district.

Balaka District Council Chairperson, Michael Sauka, told Zodiak Online that development of by-laws is a step towards making farmers realize hard earned profits from their produce.

"The by-laws are a win-win situation both from farmers as well as agro based companies in the district when it comes to buying of farm produce," he said.

On agriculture fair, Sauka said such events provide opportunities to both farmers and agro based companies to interact; thereby enhancing information sharing between the two parties.

Meanwhile, Balaka District Agriculture Extension Coordinating Committee (DAECC), Chairperson, Richard Mwale, says number of agro based companies has doubled in the last four years.

Mwale attributed this to agriculture fairs now often conducted in the district.

The event attracted over five companies from banking and agriculture sectors operating in the district.
