MESIP to Empower Community Monitors

Amid reports of abuse of school grants in most primary schools across the country, government says it is equipping communities with monitoring skills in schools’ projects through Malawi Education Sector Improvement Project (MESIP).

MESIP Component Manager Jean Chiona told Zodiak Online that communities are reminded to own all projects implemented in their schools.

“Through their active participation in project implementations, the projects will be implemented transparently without registering any abuse of funds,” Chiona said.

Because of abuse of funds, some parents have been reluctant to contribute to school projects.

Just recently some parents forced the District Education Office to transfer headmaster of Lauderdale primary school in Mulanje district on allegations he abused funds which parents contributed.

According to Chiona, MESIP has just been piloted in 12 education districts with funds from Global Partnership for Education and Norwegian Government.
