Misuku, Nthalire Communities Cry Foul Over Allocation of Development Projects

During the 2019/2020 financial year, the government has allocated close to K1 billion covering all sectors in Chitipa, with K145 million going towards the implementation of development projects under District Development Fund basket.

But Chairperson for Kakomo ADC Winston Silungwe told Zodiak Online that it is sad to note that most of the development projects have gone to Ulambya and Kameme, leaving out other areas such as Wenya and Misuku, insisting that the area has not benefited any project under the health sector.

"We are deeply touched with the behavior portrayed by council officials for not incorporating the interest of the citizenry as the projects continue to be bulldozed by elected leaders," Silungwe said.

On his part, Health Governance Officer at Karonga Diocese Mr. Obert Mkandawire asked Members of Parliament in Chitipa to stick to stipulated guidelines when implementing various development projects in their respective constituencies.

Mkandawire said, "As an organization. We will continue to play an advocacy role by pushing the government to consider upgrading Nthalire Health Center to the status of a rural hospital so those communities should be able to access health services within a walkable distance"

Responding to the issue, Director of Planning and Development at Chitipa district council Mr Tamanya Harawa has called on political representatives to strengthen community participation when implementing development projects in a quest to promote transparency and accountability as critical pillars of democracy.

This is part of promoting high quality, accountable and responsive public health service delivery in Karonga and Chitipa districts with funding from OSISA.
