IOM Tips Malawi on Skilled Immigrants

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has suggested that capitalizing on skills by immigrants would help government save a lot of money spent on refugees.

IOM Regional Director, Charles Kwenin, said on Monday on the sidelines of the Regional Capacity Building Training on Migration Management and Migrant Production and Assistance in Southern Africa Region in Blantyre.

Kwenin said migrants have a potential to develop countries they reside in.

‘‘Another direct benefit is that most migrants are professionals who contribute in different ways through innovations, investments and they are as well our ambassadors abroad”. He said.

Kwenin added that Immigrants fills a labor gap in some countries that have labor deficiencies in certain skills.

Ministry of Homeland Security Principal Secretary, Sam Madula, said government is working on issuing working permits to expatriated migrants.

‘’As the ministry we are currently working on how to incorporate migrants in various sectors with funding from the United Nation,’’Madula said.

According to the ministry, among 43, 000 refugees at the Dzaleka Camp, 33, 000 are asylum seekers.

Apart from Malawi, the conference attracted delegates from Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia.
