Man Convicted for Soliciting Funds

Balaka Magistrate’s Court has convicted Robert Mgundo for soliciting funds from the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Electrification Project Affected Persons.

He has been slapped with two years custodial sentence which he is serving at Ntcheu prison.

Spokesperson for the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Egrita Ndala, said in a statement that the convict solicited and received money amounting to K1, 700,000.00 from the persons.

“On 17th October, 2017, the Anti-Corruption Bureau received a complaint alleging that Mr. Robert Mgundo, Chairperson of Village Grievances Resolution Management Committee (VGRMC) at Senzani along the Phombeya-Nkhoma Overhead Lines Project in Ntcheu was soliciting money from Project Affected Persons. The project was implemented with funds from the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA).

“He was charged with two counts of corrupt practices and two counts of abuse of office contrary to Section 24(1) and 25B (1) of the Corrupt Practices Act. He was convicted on 2nd October, 2019 on all the counts,” reads the statement in part.
