Human rights activists said campaigners need to utilize the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence in sensitizing families to protect the elderly and children in the aftermath of the presidential election case.

Executive Director of Family Rights Elderly and Child Protection FRECHIP Mrs. Esmie Tembenu told Zodiak Online that families are being regarded as major players on security matters towards the vulnerable groups.

She said the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, which falls from November 25th to 10th December, will give them an opportunity to reach out to many people.

“As the family rights organization that promotes the welfare of the elder people and children, we are targeting the 16 days of activisms to reach out to the villagers, and equip them on how to protect the two groups in case of any protests after the judgement,” she said.

Mrs. Tembenu, therefore, urged families not to allow older people and children to be coaxed by any group to attend to any protests after the judgment.

“When these children and older people get injured during such protests, families members are being left alone to provide support and care to the injured, while the organizers of the demonstrations do enjoy their rights in their homes.”

She has, however, urged political party leaders to accept the court judgment, and if they will not be satisfied they should resort for a court appeal than to go onto the streets and protest.

Another activist Caleb Ng’ombo said the issue of peace and security among the elderly and children is the responsibility of every Malawian.

“As human rights activists we should factor in issues of preparing families to protect the elderly and children in case of any uncertainty after the judgment during the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence,” Ng’ombo said.

Recently, the UK Government and the Malawi Law Society urged political parties to prepare their supporters about the outcome of the court case.
