Plan Malawi Urges Girls to Diversify Careers

Plan International Malawi has tipped girls to make thorough exploration on careers before deciding on what they would want to do in life but not just jump on crowd-puller professions.

The organization’s 18+ Project Manager in Mulanje, Jane Mweziwina, observed that the majority of girls opt to join nursing, teaching, law and the police because of peer-pressure.

“Most girls even boys in rural areas are not aware of other professions such as banking, insurance even entrepreneurship.

“We need to sensitize them on different professions and this will help them make informed choices after completing their secondary education,” said Mweziwina.

Re-Union Insurance Mulanje Branch Manager, Eda Magalasi, encouraged girls to take up unique and challenging professions to demonstrate to the world that girls can do what boys do.

“Yes challenges are there at school, home and in villages but what is needed is to persevere and show pessimists that girls can succeed in anything,” said Magalasi.

Agnes Singano who is in form four at Khwalala Community Day Secondary School described the initiative as an inspiration to her and fellow girls.

“We are very grateful to Plan International for taking us to various offices. For sure I had no knowledge that insurance is such a good profession,” said Agnes.

Plan International is implementing a “girls get equal” global campaign with an activity dubbed girls take over.

Mweziwina said in this campaign, girls are exposed to various careers to open their minds on the available options.
