Political Parties Have Until March 2020 to Comply with Political Parties Act

The Registrar of Political Parties has extended dates for political parties to comply with the Political Parties Act, which deters hand-outs during political campaigns, to March 2020.

Meanwhile, analysts have recommended deregistration of all political parties that will not comply with the Political Parties Act by the new set deadline of March 2020.

Both Unandi Banda of National Elections Trust and Kizito Tenthani of the Centre for Multiparty Democracy say the extension of dates for the political parties to comply with the political party Act will help the parties have enough time to meet the requirements.

“If the political parties do not respect the law, the only option is to remove them off from the system,” Banda said.

On his part, Tenthani said, “The extension will not only give time to political parties but also the office of the register to finalise preparing necessary application forms.’’

There has been concerns that some political parties are failing to comply with what is stipulated in the Political Parties Act which came into effect in 2018.

The Act, among other things, demands that all political parties should collect hundred signatures from each district across the country , should disclose party financing strategies and also show respective Party  physical addresses.

As of 2019 Malawi has about 50 political parties.
