APAM Wants Report on Albino Killings

The Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) says it wants the commission of inquiry instituted by President Peter Mutharika on albino killings to release a report on people behind the killings.

APAM National Coordinator Overstone Kondowe said this during an audience with Presidential Advisor on Civil Society Organizations, Mavuto Bamusi, today, saying delays in releasing the report is proving to be detrimental in ending attacks of persons with albinism.

This was one of issues which the APAM National Coordinator presented to the presidential advisor as one of the matters they want to be addressed for the well-being of persons with albinism in the country.

“We wonder why the Commission of Inquiry is silent at a time the Malawi Human Rights Commission - a state body which was also investigating the matter about three years ago- is also not releasing a report,” Kondowe said.

“APAM is also concerned over the delays to release a police report on the death of murder suspect, Bulea Lule.”

Lule died in hands of police in Lilongwe as he was being suspected of having a hand in killing of an albino boy.

"It was not our intention to rush to the media with this matter, but we are just concerned because this is now being seen as a move to hide something,” Kondowe said.

During the meeting in Lilongwe, APAM disclosed that is looking for 3 hectares of land to put up a Wellness Center, where a company of manufacturing sunscreen lotion, can also be set up.

In his response, Bamusi reiterated that President Mutharika is committed in addressing the matters raised by APAM.

"I will take up the issue of land with the President because it will assist in ensuring sustainability in efforts of improving the welfare of persons with albinism,” Bamusi said.

On delays to release reports of inquiries on albino killings and the suspected murder of Lule, Bamusi promised to follow up with relevant bodies, apart from reporting to President Mutharika.

The two parties have since agreed to have a follow up meeting in January 2020.
