Macra Lifts Moratorium
The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority MACRA has lifted a moratorium on issuance of radio licenses in the Frequency Modulation (FM) band.
MACRA Director of Broadcasting, Fergus Lipenga, announced this at a news conference in Blantyre.
He said this now means that some broadcasters will be required to switch off transmitters in areas which are also covered by frequencies from other areas.
But already there are fears that this will affect operations of existing users of some frequencies as there is likely to be effect on existing frequencies.
The moratorium was issued in June 2018 due to among others, congestion in transmission.
