Prison Officials Reshuffled

The Malawi Prison Service MPS has transferred some senior officers from Zomba central prison, barely a month after three inmates escaped lawful custody from the prison.

MPS national spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba has confirmed to Zodiak Online that officer in charge has been transferred to Chichiri prison in Blantyre, station officer has been transferred to Mpyupyu prison Officer-in-Charge while discipline officer has been transferred to Domasi prison in Zomba to work as discipline officer.

The national prison spokesperson says the transfers are normal disputing reports that the three senior officers have been transferred following incidents of prisoners escaping from the maximum security prison.

“It is true that three senior officers, Officer-in-Charge, station officer and discipline officer have been transferred to other stations from Zomba central prison and the transfers in the department are normal and there is nothing sinister which has triggered the transfers,” said Shaba.

Inside sources claim the three seniors officers have been transferred because of continued incidents of prisoners escaping from the central prison with the latest incident recorded on 6th of November 2019 when three inmates escaped through a hole they drilled on the wall of the prison cell.

Two of the three escapees, Oscar Shaban Banda 39 years, who was serving a 30 year jail term and Dube Mwale 31 years old who was serving 32 year jail sentence were rearrested a week later.

This year alone, Zomba central prison, built in 1935 to accommodate 150 inmates but now has over 2000 inmates has experienced three incidents of prisoners escaping and some of the escapees have not been rearrested.
